Verige Strait UXO Clearance Project
October 3, 2018In September 2018, PCM Special Projects Team conducted a reconnaissance of the Zeta River, north of Podgorica in Montenegro. The site has been known to the local population as “Podgorica Beach” and is used extensively by locals and tourists as a place of leisure and relaxation. The river, at its deepest point, is 5 meters deep. In 1944, the retreating Axis Forces dumped a large amount of ammunition in this part of the River, so as to deny their enemies access to ammunition. Since the end of WW2, the local population used this area of the river to dispose of ordnance, by throwing it in – out of sight, out of mind! The concentration of ammunition in the Zeta River poses grave hazards to the population of this area of Podgorica. Accordingly, the need for a survey and full clearance of this stretch of river is well overdue.
The short film above, a PCM production of our media unit led by Yago, highlighting the issue and further emphasizes the need to remove ordnance and rehabilitate the area for future generations.
