In October 2022, HALO Trust Training Team delivered an IMAS EOD Level 3 course to members of its Ukraine programme as well as some invited Ukrainian agency personnel. HALO’s Instructors delivered the training, supported by the MAT Kosovo EOD school’s training support staff.
HALO was able to use the MAT Kosovo facility to the fullest, including full life support, training infrastructure and facilities at the MAT Kosovo school and the full diversity of outside training areas. Even airport transfers, in-country transportation, board and lodging and extensive use of explosives ranges were all organised by MAT Kosovo, allowing the HALO to focus 100% on delivery of the course content, live training, and assessments. A 4-day demolitions range segment featured high and low order techniques on a variety of live, fused ammunition natures, and single-item as well as multiple item attacks.
MAT Kosovo’s Managing Director Ben Remfrey stated “We are delighted to be able to fully support HALO, one of the world’s premier mine clearance organisations in all elements of delivery of their own training product. We are proud of HALO’s vote of confidence in our permanent training facilities in Kosovo, and pleased to count HALO as another happy client. Providing a full suite of areas, facilities, tools, equipment, support, logistics etc, suitable for all their training needs is one of the things we offer to HALO and other clients who have the capability to deliver their own in-house training. The measure of success is when the client’s own trainers can focus 100% on delivery and not be distracted with facilities, logistics, staff management and other distractions. We hope to see further courses come to the MAT Kosovo facility again soon, for HALO’s Ukrainian operations, as well as beyond”. HALO’s Media office stated: “The extent of the contamination in Ukraine means HALO is rapidly expanding. We are training hundreds of new deminers in the country to meet the challenge. Having the additional resources of MAT Kosovo to support our more specialised needs has really helped us to produce the highly skilled staff we need in Ukraine.”
Of course, it helps that Ukrainians have country-access into Kosovo free of any bureaucratic hurdles whatsoever.
